Charles Dickens Reflection on Society in Hard Times, Oliver Twist, Nic
Charles Dickens' Reflection on Society in Hard Times, Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby, and David Copperfield In this article I will analyze how and why Dickens decided to remark on the general public wherein he survived his books. I will be looking at ââ¬ËHard Timesââ¬â¢, ââ¬ËOliver Twistââ¬â¢, ââ¬ËNicholas Nickelbyââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËDavid Copperfieldââ¬Ë. Charles Dickens was viewed as one of the best English writers during the Victorian time frame, and during this period, authors had a convention of remarking on issues influencing society through their work. They decided to communicate their perspectives like this so individuals would acknowledge precisely what is occurring in the town or town they are living in. Charles Dickens had an extremely upsetting youth, individuals from his family were sent to jail and he was sent to work at twelve years old in a Blacking Factory; he got hopeless. He got away from this by composing anecdotal writings in school; he at that point built up his current aptitudes and gained quick ground. From the whole injury he experienced, he chosen to communicate his agony through his words. The instruction framework was incredibly poor. Just youngsters with working guardians would be taught, while less fortunate kids would need to work. In the novel ââ¬ËHard Timesââ¬â¢, the instruction framework was firm, cruel and harsh; ââ¬ËQuadruped. Graminivorousâ⬠¦Age known by marks in mouth.ââ¬â¢ This directly to-the-point meaning of a pony proposes that the instructor coddles the youthful, delicate, blameless kids with pointless realities. The word ââ¬ËGraminivorousââ¬â¢ features that these kids are being transformed into grown-ups intellectually on the grounds that he ââ¬Ëfedââ¬Ë the guiltless kids with realities that grown-ups will typically know. Everything is so rearranged for him, the instructor does... ... was incongruity that Dickens utilized here: the word ââ¬Ëparlourââ¬â¢ proposes that it is a charming home however whatââ¬â¢s going on inside is absolutely the inverse. Taking everything into account, Dickens has utilized his works effectively to remark on society since the entirety of the issues that were influencing all classes of individuals, he included them so we could truly comprehend what went on during the Victorian occasions. I have taken in a great deal from this, about how individuals lived and how they were dealt with. I have discovered that these two timeframes were entirely unexpected to one another. The epic that had the most effect on me was Nicholas Nickelby; this is on the grounds that Dickens caused us to feel thoughtful for the characters, he caused me to feel as though I was there as one of the characters since this novel was so persuading. I truly felt a great deal of compassion toward the youngsters who had to experience the ill effects of this insensitive pitilessness.

Harlem Rena Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Harlem Rena - Essay Example This re-birth of the social, social, instruction and community standards, changed the general public in general. This time where the incredible melancholy was going on and a great many individuals were jobless, placed another life operating at a profit people of America (Carry, 1998). This period had created numerous incredible researchers, writers and writers. Out of which, the sonnets of two such artists and the idea of twofold cognizance created in their work () is talked about here. The sonnet talked about first is Langston Hughesââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Let America be America Once Againâ⬠. It is a passionate bit of culture where the artist credits America being the place that is known for nothing, daring and amicable individuals. The general public which sets its establishment on instructive foundations and industrialization, the nation which was the place that is known for dreams for some individuals of color far and wide and uncommonly in America, who battled for America, kicked the bucket for it and depended on it. The writer terms America as the place that is known with the expectation of complimentary where there is no opportunity, regardless of how much forfeits you have made. There is solid disturb about the disparity, compulsion, neediness and treachery through which each individual of color needed to experience. This sonnet portrays the mindset of white prevalence over the dark and red individuals. Both of whom had given blood in the establishment of this very nation. Langston likewise disheartened by the way that the individuals of color being mortified on the base of their way of life, they were called savages in light of their human advancement, their dignity is being broken and their confidence is being suffocate in the wrath of racial oppression. Also, it shares a compelling enthusiastic inclination that it isn't the America for which his ancestors meandered the world over, it isn't that America for which they had yielded their lives. It was never America to me said the writer. However, at long last he didnââ¬â¢t let the expectation go down and accepts that America would be America once more. Second sonnet chose here is James

Law and Morality free essay sample
The state has capacity to enact profound quality so as to ensure itself against practices that may break down society and its organizations Society ââ¬Å"means a network of thoughts; without shared thoughts on governmental issues, ethics, and morals no general public can existâ⬠(Devlin, 10). ? Devlin engaged the possibility of societys moral texture. He contended that the criminal law must regard and strengthen the ethical standards of society so as to maintain social control from disentangling. Societyââ¬â¢s ethical quality is an essential, if not the urgent, component that holds it together Social orders deteriorate from inside more every now and again than they are separated by outer weights. There is breaking down when no regular ethical quality is watched and history shows that the extricating of good bonds is frequently the main phase of deterioration, with the goal that society is legitimized in finding a way to save its ethical code as it does to protect its legislature the concealment of bad habit is as much the laws business as the concealment of rebellious exercises. We will compose a custom article test on Law and Morality or on the other hand any comparative subject explicitly for you Don't WasteYour Time Recruit WRITER Just 13.90/page Devlin, The Enforcement of Morals 36 (1959) A general public is qualified for authorize its ethical quality so as to safeguard its particular common qualities and lifestyle HART: Hart evaluates Lord Devlinââ¬â¢s first contention by testing his origination of society ââ¬Å"*He has+ a confounded meaning of what a general public isâ⬠(Hart (1962) section 82). ? Assault against the Moderate/Disintegration Thesis ? Hart contends that decriminalizing conduct, which has recently been seen as improper conduct, isn't really a danger to the societyââ¬â¢s long haul union or presence. Aappears to move from the worthy suggestion that some common ethical quality is basic to the presence of any general public to the inadmissible recommendation that a general public is indistinguishable with its profound quality as that is at some random snapshot of its history, so an adjustment in its profound quality is equivalent to the obliteration of a general public. (Hart 51-52. Italics in unique. ) ? The moderate postulation infers real cases of the crumbling of society for which Devlin didn't give, and (in Harts see) couldn't have given, generous experimental help. I don't affirm that any deviation from a general public? s shared ethical quality compromises its reality anything else than I state that any incendiary action undermines its reality. I affirm that they are the two exercises which are proficient in their tendency of undermining the presence of society with the goal that neither can be put past the law . I would dare to declare, for instance, that you can't have a game without decides and that if there were no standards there would be no game. On the off chance that I am asked whether that implies that the game is ââ¬Å¾identical? With the guidelines, I would be willing for the inquiry to be addressed whichever way in the conviction that the appropriate response would turn into dead end. In the event that I am 1 (Hartââ¬â¢s term H. L. A. Hart, Social Solidarity and the Enforcement of Morality, The University of Chicago Law Review 35 (1976), pp 1-13]. ) asked whether an adjustment in the principles implies that one game has vanished and another has had its spot, I would answer most likely not, however that it would rely upon the degree of the change. (Devlin, Morals 37). ? Master Devlin doesn't then imagine that this force ought to be practiced against each and every sort and demonstration of corruption. Society should practice this force just when the ethical reasonableness of the dominant part with respect to a given corrupt action ascends to the degree of significant ââ¬Å"intolerance, anger, and disgustâ⬠(Devlin, Morals 17) ? DWORKIN: If society ought not enact against all shamelessness, in light of the fact that not every improper movement and acts jeopardize its reality, at that point what gauges for proof and activity will be utilized to legitimize societyââ¬â¢s option to authorize its ethical quality in some random case? The edge standard that Lord Devlin offers is open shock, so it comes out that just energetic open dissatisfaction is important all things considered!? Assault against the Extreme/Conservative Thesis Hart dismissed the extraordinary postulation on the ground that it possibly defended lawful implementation of virtues, paying little mind to their substance, basically in light of the fact that they were generally held. Such limitations confine society from advancing normally as far as its citizensââ¬â¢ moral convictions rehearses. ? Devlin? s approach of fusing virtues into the law ââ¬Å"regardless of substance, essentially in light of the fact that they were broadly heldâ⬠places ââ¬Å"an unjustified brake on changes. The substance of good enactment ought to be controlled by what he terms ââ¬Å"public moralityâ⬠. ? This isn't just the larger part position that could be controlled by a popular assessment of public sentiment. Open profound quality is the view held by the ââ¬Å"reasonable manâ⬠/ââ¬Å"right-disapproved manâ⬠? What is worthy to the common man, the man in the jury box, who may likewise be known as the sensible man or the privilege disapproved of man Devlin The Enforcement of Morals 38 (1959) Devlin picked the man in the jury box in light of the fact that. The decision of a jury (12 people) must be consistent (at the time he was composing) b) The jury will just arrive at its decision after the issue has been completely analyzed and pondered. c) The jury box is where the normal people origination of profound quality is authorized. ? Somewhere else his remarks propose that the substance of open profound quality can be distinguished by an ethical instinct ? It is the intensity of a presence of mind and not the intensity of reason that is behind the decisions of societyâ⬠¦There is, for instance, a general severe dislike of homosexuality. We ought to ask ourselves in the main occurrence in the case of, taking a gander at it tranquilly and impartially, we view it as a bad habit so odious that its negligible nearness is an offense. On the off chance that that is the certified inclination of the general public wherein we live, I don't perceive how society can be denied the option to annihilate it (Devlin, Morals 40). ? As DWORKIN phrases the contention: ââ¬Å"In the last examination the choice must lay on some article of sincere trust, and in a majority rule government this kind of issue must be settled as per vote based standards. It is, all things considered, the network which acts when the dangers and authorizations of the criminal law are brought to shoulder. The people group must assume the ethical liability, and it should in this manner follow up on its own lights â⬠that is, on the ethical confidence of its membersâ⬠(Dworkin, 246-247) HART: ? Recognizes Positive and Critical Morality Critical Morality: An announcement of what is ethically evident Positive/customary profound quality: An announcement of what a great many people accept is ethically obvious. ? Hart contended Devlin consistently slipped into the Positive Morality approach. The issue is that convictions about good issues change. At some random time in a network, there might be an accord on some ethical inquiries, while on different inquiries there will be sharp divisions. After some time, an issue may go from involving accord to involving contention, and given sufficient opportunity, an issue which there was an agreement one way may in the long run involve agreement the other way. How might we realize that our laws are implementing societyââ¬â¢s moral accord instead of simply ensuring the last generationââ¬â¢s preferences against an agreement conforming to another position. The Harm Principle Hartââ¬â¢s2 purpose of origin was Millââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËHarm Principleââ¬â¢: If there are any ââ¬ËCritically Moral Rightsââ¬â¢ or ââ¬ËNatural Rightsââ¬â¢ there must be a characteristic right of each individual to be similarly free. Consequently ââ¬Å"The just reason for which force can legitimately be practiced over any individual from an edified network without wanting to will be to forestall damage to other people. â⬠3 ? Beginning with the freedom securing Harm Principle empowered Hart to cast onto Devlin the weight of verification on the issue of the connection among unethical behavior and social damage. Unquestionably, Devlin gave no hard proof to help his attestation that society would be more regrettable off without lawful moralism however neither did Hart give any verifiable proof that society would be a superior (or, in any event, no more awful a) place without legitimate moralism (Peter Cane 31). ? DEVLIN: the way that assent isn't a barrier for different mischief based offenses indicated that the damage guideline was not the laws regularizing establishment. HART: differentiation should have been drawn among moralism and paternalism. Paternalism is legitimization of meddling with someone else without wanting to, where that individual will at that point be in an ideal situation or shielded from hurt. The presence of the wrongdoing of plural marriage additionally sabotaged the mischief rule. HART: differentiation should have been drawn among Harm and Offense. What's up with Bigamy is its unsavoriness to people groups strict sensibilities. ? DEVLIN: We see (moral) impropriety considered went condemning, and we don't preface this on destructiveness on the grounds that in any case all violations will be dealt with the same whether it was done malignantly or something else. HART: qualification should have been drawn between standards of Sentencing and criminal risk. The way that the ethical gravity of a guilty parties direct its illegitimacy instead of its hurtfulness can be considered in condemning discloses to us nothing about the connection among law and profound quality. [Hart offers no motivation behind why this ought to be so (Peter Cane 32)] ? To summarize Hartââ¬â¢s position: Everyone has from the earlier freedom. Can't practice that freedom when it encroaches (Harmââ¬â¢s) anotherââ¬â¢s freedom. An adjustment in social organizations isn't the kind of damage from which a general public has an option to ensure itself. A societyââ¬â¢s option to act ought to be limited to certifiable and up and coming as opposed to hypothesized and inaccessible damage. The law appears to have close to nothing or nothing to do with the prompt cons
Writing a Scientific Review Paper
Writing a Scientific Review PaperWhen you write a scientific review paper you will want to ensure that your paper contains only the most accurate information. Unfortunately, there are many scientists out there who just use their publications as a way to get published and will not disclose any information that is not 'approved' by the journal that they are writing for. This can easily lead to dishonest and misleading information being published. Fortunately, you can get this information published in your own area of expertise with the help of some reliable sources that can help you.The most important thing to remember when writing a scientific review paper is to always include a short description of the scientific aspect of the study that was used in the study. In addition, this should also describe the results of the study. It is always best to give enough information so that it is clear that the review is not an opinion piece, but rather a neutral examination of the data. A poor att empt at a scientific review paper will almost always be rejected by the scientific journals. You must make sure that your paper clearly describes the methods used in the study. It must also provide sufficient information to identify the authors of the study. As part of the peer review process, the authors must provide a detailed manuscript for the journal. They are expected to provide proof of income and references to their work. Furthermore, the authors must have declared all conflicts of interest in their study before they submitted it.When writing a scientific review paper, you must not only focus on describing the findings. You must also describe the methods used in the study and the limitations. If there are any other relevant studies that can be used to support the findings then this should be discussed. The information provided in the paper must be accurate and based on a valid research study.Although the authors do not have to disclose any information about how they conducted the study, it is recommended that you ask them to disclose any other relevant studies that they might have conducted. If you cannot find these through searching, then contact the editors of the specific journal in which the paper was written. This will usually require you to provide more documentation than you may need. However, it is important to get the information that you need. One of the first steps in writing a scientific review paper is to gather all of the necessary information. For example, if you are reviewing a study that was funded by a pharmaceutical company, then you will need to see a list of all of the research grants that the company has awarded. This is especially important if the study did not meet the criteria to be considered an 'independent' study. If you need to discuss the positive data that you found, you will need to have the full names of the investigators and their affiliations. It is also necessary to know the following: the year the study was conducted, the location of the study, the number of participants, the results, and the methodology employed in the study. The authors of the study must clearly indicate if they were compensated for their participation in the study or not. When submitting your work to a scientific journal, you will need to clearly indicate that you had no contact with the company that sponsored the study. You will also need to include all references that support your claim. You should also provide an editor with a signed form that is clearly stating that you are not associated with the company that sponsored the study. Without this form, the editor will not consider your paper for publication.

Communication as it Pertains to Law Essay - 636 Words
Communication as it Pertains to Law Law as a career commands respect and demands reasonability. The profession requires more years of education and intellectual honing than most individuals are willing to partake in. The experience of maturing into an attorney brings with it authority and understanding. Some of the crucial skills demanded by this field are strong writing and speaking, reading, researching, analyzing and thinking logically (Abraham, Herman, 2000). The art of communication is an underlying theme for oneââ¬â¢s capacity to be a brilliant lawyer. Many universities have an emphasis on communication in their pre-law curriculum to help bolster studentsââ¬â¢ preparedness for law school. For example, San Jose State Universityââ¬â¢sâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦A., Beebe, S. J., Ivy, 2001). A major part of practicing law is verbal communication. Time spent in a courtroom, or judgeââ¬â¢s chamber, or with a client are all periods of time when oneââ¬â¢s emphasis is on verbal messages. If a person effectively uses and interprets verbal messages, the exchange of ideas will be successful. One technique commonly used for effective persuasive strategy is creating dissonance and then restoring balance. Another strategy used is making oneââ¬â¢s self seem more competent to an audience, citing evidence to support your ideas. If a strong verbal argument is not presented then there is little chance that a resolution will have the desired outcome (Beebe, S. A. et al., 2001). Another part of the equation for effective communication in law is silent but imperative, nonverbal expression. A speakerââ¬â¢s nonverbal phrases complement her verbal expressions more than the most eloquent of phrases ever could. If she maintains eye contact, has enthusiastic vocal inflection, and moves and gestures purposefully, her audience will likely view her as dynamic. These qualities, together with appropriate dress, will help to enhance her credibility. In the legal arenas, techniques like these will bolster oneââ¬â¢s personal presentation, and the use of visual aids will help to evoke both positive and negative emotions. Herman Hollerith, the Inventor of Computer Punch Cards
Aà punch cardà is a piece ofà stiff paperà that contains digital information represented by the presence or absence of holes in predefined positions. The information might be data for data processing applications or, as in earlier times, used to directly controlà automated machinery. The termsà IBM card, orà Hollerith card,à specifically refer to punch cards used in semiautomatic data processing. Punch cards were widely used through much of the 20th century in what became known as the data processing industry, where specialized and increasingly complexà unit record machines, organized intoà data processing systems, used punched cards for data input, output, and storage.à Many earlyà digital computersà used punched cards, often prepared usingà keypunchà machines, as the primary medium for input of bothà computer programsà andà data. Punched cards are now obsolete as aà recording medium, as the last election in which they were used was the 2014 midterms, according to the Pew Research Center. Semen Korsakovà was the first to use punch cards in informatics for information store and search. Korsakov announced his new method and machines in September 1832; rather than seeking patents, he offered the machines for public use. Herman Hollerith In 1881, Herman Hollerith began designing a machine to tabulate census data more efficiently than by traditional hand methods. The U.S. Census Bureau had taken eight years to complete the 1880 census, and it was feared that the 1890 census would take even longer. Hollerith invented and used a punched card device to help analyze the 1890 U.S. census data. His great breakthrough was his use of electricity to read, count and sort punched cards whose holes represented data gathered by the census-takers. His machines were used for the 1890 census and accomplished in one year what would have taken nearly 10 years of hand tabulating. In 1896, Hollerith founded the Tabulating Machine Company to sell his invention, the Company became part ofà IBMà in 1924. Hollerith first got his idea for the punch-card tabulation machine from watching a train conductor punch tickets. For his tabulation machine, he used the punch card invented in the early 1800s, by a French silk weaver calledà Joseph-Marie Jacquard. Jacquard invented a way of automatically controlling the warp and weft threads on a silk loom by recording patterns of holes in a string of cards. Holleriths punch cards and tabulating machines were a step toward automated computation. His device could automatically read information which had been punched onto a card. He got the idea and then saw Jacquards punchcard. Punch card technology was used in computers up until the late 1970s. Computer punched cards were read electronically, the cards moved between brass rods, and the holes in the cards created an electric current where the rods would touch. What Is a Chad? A chad is a small piece of paper or cardboard produced in punching paper tape or data cards; also can be called a piece of chad. The term originated in 1947 and is of unknown origin. In laymens terms, chad is the punched out parts of the card ââ¬â the holes.

Perfection Is Not Immutable What Is Perfection
If someone is to ask a class in the 90ââ¬â¢s, the question ââ¬Å"what is perfection?â⬠, the answers are very much bound to be different from each individual in the class. If you then ask a class now in this century ââ¬Å"what is perfection?â⬠again the answers will be different from those in the 90ââ¬â¢s and unique and distinct from the other individuals in that class. Perfection does not necessarily include immutability. The notion of perfection is ever-changing and so this makes it almost impossible to have the perfect being be immutable. To be the perfect being, one must know what perfection is. Perfection is not immutable, the definition of perfection is constantly changing, and so the definition of Godââ¬â¢s perfection must also being constantly changing in order to stay in terms with what perfection is believed to be. What perfection is, is constantly different for each individual, and for God to be perfect as our superior, God must be perfect in all ways w e believe are perfect. If this becomes false, how is God really perfect (Quinn Taliaferro, 1999)? Although the arguments on why it would make sense for God to be immutable may be convincing it is important then to see if these arguments can be contradictory, which I believe they can. The argument regarding Godââ¬â¢s absolute perfection is claiming that God cannot change because God is already perfect, if God is perfect then there is no need for change (Quinn Taliaferro, 1999). Maya Angelouââ¬â¢s work has been heavily affected by the era in which she began to write. The fifties and sixties were a tumultuous time for most African-Americans in the US. The civil-rights movement, led by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the National Urban League, Martin Luther King, Jr., and others, was instrumental in securing legislation, notably the Civil-Rights Acts of 1964 and 1968 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The deaths provoked racial riots where police dogs were used to attack civil rights demonstrators. Contributions that raised by utilizing the name of afederal candidate are presumed to be federal contributions unlessspecific notice is given otherwise. All federal expenditures described above must be paid for with federallypermissible funds. Pay for certain federal election activities (such as voter registration, voter identification, get-out-the-vote activities and other genericactivities that do not mention federal candidates) partially with federallypermissible funds and partially with Levin funds (The first $10,000 ofcontributions accepted by a local committee consistent with state law). Merely spending such funds on these federal election activities do notcount against any of the federal registration thresholds discussed aboveand will not, in and of themselves, require a local party committee toregister with the FEC. A local committee should not make any public communication that expresslyadvocates the election or defeat of a federal candidate or that iscoordinated with a federal candidate without checking with the state partyas to whether such expenditures are permissible. Once county party committee does qualify as a federal committee it must: 1) Open federal account and deposit federal contributions into it. 2) Pay for all administrative, generic, federal fundraising and directcandidate support expenditures with an appropriate split of federaland non-federal dollars. 3) If the local committee is affiliated with the state party, all federalcontributions received are aggregated with $10,000 federalcontribution limit to the state party and other affiliated, federallyregistered local committees within the state. 4) Contribution limits to federal candidates are shared with the stateparty. 5) Pay for all administrative and other federal activities directly fromits federal account (except for certain payroll expenses as describedin the outline). 6) File periodic reports with the FEC. Oedipus the King
Introduction This is an Athenian tragedy by Sophocles. The main character Oedipus is the King of Thebes. Oedipusââ¬â¢ own fault brings him down and in an embarrassing way. The literature work presents a perfect example of tragedy. King Oedipus is the protagonist in the play. His tragic error is linked to a natural curse on his biological father.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Oedipus the King specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Analysis of the tragic error The chronology of events begins when a young man learns about a rumor that King Polybus and Queen Merope are not his biological parents. Innocently, Oedipus sets out on a journey with the intention of permanently moving away to thwart the Oracle, which is unknown to him. Oedipus feels that if he is far away then he may not harm his foster parents whom he now believes are his biological parents. The first part of his tragic error occurs during this journey. Oed ipus meets a stranger, who unknown to him is his biological father, Laius. A quarrel ensues which eventually leads to a fight. By the end of the war, Oedipus kills everybody except one person in the strangerââ¬â¢s entourage (Storr, 2008)). The cause of disagreement was a very simple argument between them over who had the right-of-way. All This takes place while the two, King Laius and his Son Oedipus are unaware of their identities. Oedipus did not even know that the stranger he was fighting was a King. The second part of King Oedipus tragic error, ironically occurs after Oedipus uses his wisdom to free the Kingdom of Thebes. It is interesting to see how wisdom and the wish to rescue Thebes drive Oedipus into a classic tragedy. Oedipus answers the riddle from Sphinx to deliver the Kingdom of Thebes from a curse.â⬠What is the creature that walks on four in the morning walks on two at noon and walks on three in the evening?â⬠The Sphinx asked, à ´ Man,â⬠Oedipus re sponded. The reward for this work was for Oedipus to be made the King of Thebes. He was then given the Queen of Thebes, Jocasta, to marry. The Queen incidentally was his biological mother. This opens both ends of the tragic error. The Oracle he ran away from was then fulfilled. Oedipus is a victim of fate, killing his father and his mother. The order of events is guided by his brilliance in which Oedipus attempt to unravel the truth. This is in addition to control his destiny .This however, climaxes into the tragedy that leads to his embarrassing downfall.Advertising Looking for essay on art and design? May his joyous looks be presage of the joyous news he brings!â⬠He says. The news from Apollo seems to bring the expected joy and hope. Creon, ââ¬Å"Good news, for even intolerable ills. Finding right issue, tend to naught but good.â⬠Creon explains that evasion will only come after the murderer of Laius; the former King is found and prosecuted. With determination to avert his curse, Oedipus commits himself to apprehend the murderer and make sure justice is done. Ironically, Oedipus is the killer himself. Further complications arise when Jocasta disapproves the blind prophetââ¬â¢s prophesy that King Oedipus killed the former King Laius. The news from the prophet is in fact true but a mystery to understand. Jocasta advises Oedipus not to be bothered by looking for the murderer. She says who the man is. Let it be. Twere wastes of thought to weigh such idle words.â⬠However, Oedipus is not convinced and insists to pursue the matter. However, an obscurity in itself regenerates in Oedipus memory regarding a babyhood story of him being an adopted youngster. Jocastaââ¬â¢s flow of the story looked very similar to the one the old man told him in his childhood. Members of his Kingdom through the song continue to persuade him further but he resists (Storr, 2008) He continues his probe to know the murderer of Laius, the former King. The fatal chronology of events fulfills the prophesy of the tragic error when Jocasta discovers that her second husband is actually her son and a child whom together her first husband King Laius dumped in the forest to avert a curse. To her surprise the child was a live, a King and worst of all her husband whom they had four children together. With glaring in her face and because the situation then was an abomination, Queen Jocasta kills herself by committing suicide. This happens shortly before King Oedipus also discovers the truth. Oedipus realizes that he in deed killed King Laius, his biological father that he was married to his biological mother, and together they have four children (Grene, 2010). The events of the situat ion become unbearable. Oedipus, in accepting his mistake requests for punishment. He ends up being a beggar who wanders all over. The moral lessons Athenians learnt a lot from the tragic error by their King, Oedipus. Among the lessons, the Athenians learnt that destiny could never be thwarted. Oedipus in quest to know the truth and his wish to control his destiny ended disastrously. His father, Laius and his mother Jocasta conspired to kill their son in an attempt to evade destiny.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Oedipus the King specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This never worked as Oedipus was eventually rescued and he lived to fulfill what fate dictated. The curse that turned to be fate for the generations was brought by Laiusââ¬â¢ moral decadence. In his youth, he raped a young woman he was teaching. Rape is a vice that is not condoned by the society. This was the source of the curse. The two Kings, Laius, and Oedipus, tried to thwart it but never succeeded. The Athenians learnt that destiny has its mechanisms of ensuring that it is never avoided. Their King had sort advice from Apollo in trying to avoid a terrible curse that had befallen him. The response circumvented things back to King without his knowledge. Oedipus, then on following up the matter destroyed himself (Berg, 2011). It was clear to them that if something were predestined to happen, it will happen no matter what takes place. Athenians believed in the fulfillment of prophesy. The tragic events of their King, Oedipus simply reinforced their belief. Their two Kings should have believed in fate. To the Athenians it would never have come in such a torturous way. King Laius and Queen Jocasta would not have conspired to kill their son. This means that King Polybus and Queen Merope would never have brought up Oedipus. This would have reorganized the way fate would have happened. Most important being that Oedipus would never h ave bothered to unravel the mystery of his birth. When the Athenians analyzed the order of events through the tragic error by King Oedipus, it was clear that the cause was an immoral behavior. Laius had been offered an opportunity to tutor a young woman. Laius forgot the good reception he had been given, he instead of concentrating on his job became immoral. The society and especially in Athena upheld morals. The whole tragedy would have been avoided at the tiptop. It would be easy for Laius to uphold simple but important ethics than letting the entire generation go through pain and embarrassment. Application In comparison with the modern world, there is great difference in the beliefs and a change between that generation and the current one. In the modern world, leadership is learnt and the leaders do not run their countries alone. Decisions are never unilateral, to am extent that even the foreign nations influence internal affairs of other countries. Forms of leadership have also changed. Analysis of those seeking leadership including their history are done.Advertising Looking for essay on art and design? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Religion also plays a great role in the difference. Though religion existed in the Athena, the difference is in the faith. The judicial system takes the opportunity to rehabilitate those with moral decadence. Laius would have been jailed for rape. He would never have had a chance to rule since his behavior would never allow him. In the modern society, Hitler, the former Chancellor of Germany represents a leader with a tragic error. He started the Second World War and died a painful and embarrassing death. References Berg, S. (2011). Oedipus the King. New York: Oxford University press. Grene, D. (2010). Oedipus the King Table of Contents Introduction Man versus man conflict Man versus nature Man versus himself Conclusion Works Cited Introduction ââ¬ËOedipus the Kingââ¬â¢ is a play written by Sophocles in Ancient Greek at around 430 B.C. set in a fabulous past of the ancient Greek. Throughout the play, the king is determined to understand several issues about the community and himself.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Oedipus the King specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More As a result, he seeks help from the Theban chorus; Tiresias, the blind prophet; Creon, his brother in-law; Jocasta, the Oedipus wife and the shepherd. Throughout the play, conflict stands out as the main theme as exposited by exploring the three elements of conflict from the play viz. man versus man, man versus himself and man versus nature. Man versus man conflict A conflict exists between the king and the prophet Tiresias. The play begins by investigation into the cause of death of Laius, the former Theban king. When the Oedipus King seeks advice from the prophet Tiresias, to his surprise, the prophet tells him that Oedipus was responsible for the murderer of Laius. In disbelief, the King becomes annoyed with Tiresias and they end up into a heated argument. The king blames the prophet for accusing him for the murder (Sophocles 306). While the King maintains his innocence, Tiresias holds that the murderer of Laius is a Theban citizen whom they have a blood relationship. The manner in which Tiresias leaves the palace evidences unhidden conflict between him and the Oedipus King. In addition, the king is in conflict with his brother in-law, Creon. When the prophet accuses Oedipus for the murder, the king blames Creon for masterminding the accusations. The king believes that Creon is determined to undermine him. As a result, the king calls for Creonââ¬â¢s execution. Another conflict exists between Jocasta and the prophets. Jocasta beli eves that prophets are liars and the king should take none of their advice. ââ¬Å"Listen and Iââ¬â¢ll convince thee that no truth in these prophetsâ⬠(Sophocles 316). This quote reveals that Jocasta does not believe in prophets any more. There is also conflict between the king and the shepherd. When the shepherd refuses to give information on murder, the king threatens to execute him. Man versus nature Theban community is in conflict with nature. Oedipus king is determined to fight the plague, which has affected the community. As Sophocles indicates in the Creonââ¬â¢s conversation with the king, the leadership of Theban community is investigating the cause of the plague: ââ¬Å"Let me report then all what god declared.Advertising Looking for essay on literature languages? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More King Phoebus bids us straightly extirpate Fell pollution that infests the land, and no more harbor an inveterate soreâ⬠(Sophocles 315). From this quotation, it is clear that the people of Theban are determined to fight to the end the plague that runs through the community. As illustrated on the first scene, the priest and the Theban choir have also visited the palace to seek aid for the plague. The king gives them hope by noting that ââ¬Å"but I grieve at once both for the general, myself and youâ⬠(Sophocles 267). To grieve in ancient Greek meant cooperation with the suffering. Plague is a natural disease and therefore fighting it evidences this kind of conflict. Man versus himself The king is in conflict with himself. The community expects exemplary behavior from their king, especially in such ancient setting. As the play illustrates, the king killed his father and slept with his mother. The kingââ¬â¢s behavior is in conflict with the character of Oedipus king. It is therefore vivid that the king is in conflict with himself. The shepherd is also in conflict with himself. Once requested to come and testify on the murder of Laius, he agrees and in fact provides some information to the king; however, after sometime, he begs to leave without further questions (Sophocles 300). This illustrates the shepherdââ¬â¢s conflict with himself. Conclusion The major conflict arises when the prophet accuses the Oedipus for the murder of the former king. Since the entire play revolves about the murder, it is therefore justifiable that conflict is the major theme in the play ââ¬ËOedipus the Kingââ¬â¢. Kingââ¬â¢s conflict with the prophet and Creon illustrates man versus man conflict while the communityââ¬â¢s battle with the plague evidences the man versus nature conflict. The kingââ¬â¢s behavior is in conflict with what is expected of him thus underscoring the man versus man conflict. Works Cited Sophocles. ââ¬Å"Oedipus the King.â⬠The Collection. Trans. Francis Storr. Oedipus the King There is a variety of elements of drama that writers can choose from, when writing their works. These elements include theme, plot, characters, and language among others. In Oedipus the King, Sophocles uses the element of theme to produce a thrilling composition. The three important themes here include the power of conventional law, disposition to disregard the truth and confines of free will.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Oedipus the King specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Themes Sophocles uses the theme of power of conventional law. The need to bury the dead surpasses any law regardless of how the dead person was evil or unpopular. This comes out clearly for Creon after assuming power in Thebes. After losing his power to Creon, Polynices dies. Unfortunately, Creon being the king commands that Polynices corpse be left unburied for dogs and birds to feed on him and everyone; who had been wronged by this wicked ma n, see him. (Sophocles 98). Because Polynices was a wicked man, Creon assumes this fact justifies his acts. It is true that Polynices had insulted everything and everyone including religion and power. However, as the play unfolds, the audience realizes that burying the dead is not tied to state rules and it has nothing to do with citizenship and loyalty, but has everything to do with humanity. Creon comes to learn, though late; that, the rotting body of Polynices was more of lewdness than punishment. Even though there was no written law in Greece customs to bury the dead, the conventional laws, tied to humanity had power over the state. Again, Sophocles shows how people have the disposition to disregard the truth. Even though Oedipus knows the truth concerning Laiusââ¬â¢s murder, he does all he can to exculpate himself. Oedipus knows very clearly that he killed Laius single-handedly; however, he is clinging to the side of the story that claims that Laius died in the hands of st rangers. On the same basis, Oedipus chooses to ignore the oracle while Jocasta overlooks the fact that her son was to kill her husband. Oedipus knows this very well but in an attempt to feel good they deliberately choose to ignore the truth. The ironical part of this part notwithstanding; the audience cannot fail to see the vehement denial of truth. People have eyes; they see but choose not to acknowledge and accept the truth. Finally, freewill has limits and this comes out clearly in this story. Prophecy and oracles were respected amongst Greek people during this era. This same oracle had predicted that Oedipus was going to murder his own father and take his mother to bed. On the other hand, prophecy had let Jocasta know that her son would kill her husband and sleep with her. Advertising Looking for essay on art and design? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More As events unravel, it is clear to Oedipus that he is that boy talked o f in Jocastaââ¬â¢s story; however, he cannot use his freewill to change things. Things have gone out of hand such that, they cannot be restored; not even by freewill. Conclusion Sophocles employs the element of theme to communicate with the audience. The theme of this story was to address issues that were affecting the people of Thebes during this time and even in times to come. The audience can easily know what Sophocles meant by writing this script. This is because even as the audience looks back in real life, the issues addressed here are easy to identify with in the society today. These are not foreign events happening to Oedipus only; no, they are happening in real life, right under the watch of the audience. This element of drama comes out strongly and makes the play compelling. Works Cited Sophocles. ââ¬Å"Oedipus the King.â⬠Berg, Stephen Clay, Diskin. Ed. New York: Oxford University Press, 1978.
